At Pawsitive Steps, the welfare, emotional wellbeing and individual needs of every dog are at the heart of our training.
Our approach
We use positive reinforcement and reward-based training, helping dogs learn through rewards, clear communication, encouragement and understanding.
We believe training should be enjoyable for both dogs and their owners. Our approach focuses on building confidence, trust and a strong relationship between dog and handler, while teaching practical skills that support everyday life.
We do not use training methods or equipment intended to cause fear, pain, intimidation or distress. This includes harsh physical corrections and aversive training techniques.
Understanding the individual dog
Every dog is an individual. We consider their age, experience, temperament, environment, learning history and emotional state when developing training plans.
Where a dog is worried, fearful, frustrated or highly aroused, we prioritise distance, management and reducing pressure before asking the dog to learn.
We recognise that management is an important part of responsible dog ownership and is not a substitute for training, but a valuable tool that helps keep dogs and people safe while learning takes place.
Handling and welfare
Dogs are handled with care, patience and respect. We avoid forcing dogs into situations they are uncomfortable with and aim to give them appropriate choice and opportunities to move away from pressure where practical.
We promote responsible handling and consider the dog's physical and emotional welfare throughout training sessions and classes.
Working with owners
We believe successful training involves supporting the whole family. We provide owners with practical, achievable guidance and explain why behaviours occur, rather than simply focusing on stopping unwanted behaviour.
Our aim is to give owners the knowledge and confidence to continue training and supporting their dogs beyond the session.
